Oyster ponds behave as organic matter accumulators, unlike wetlands which export a large part of their natural productivity towards the ocean as well as inorganic nitrogen towards the atmosphere through denitrification. Thus, to prevent eutrophication temporary drying-out is necessary, the physical effects of which are weIl known but who se biogeochemical processes are still poorly documented. The aim of the present study was to perform a drying -out operation in an oyster pond, and to describe the modifications which occurred within the nitrogen cycle: i.e. mineralization processes within the top 5 cm of the sediment; changes in nutrient pore-water concentrations; and fluxes through the water/sediment interface. Prior to the operation, ammonia was the... |

The respective influences of the sediment and of oyster (Crassostrea gigas) farming on the accumulation and the recycling of different forms of organic and inorganic nitrogen are described. Fluxes of dissolved inorganic and organic forms of nitrogen were studied between the water column, the water overlying the sediment and the pore waters, while for particulate forms the fluxes were studied between suspended material, the "biodeposits" (faeces and pseudofaeces of Crassostrea) and the sediment. The flux of inorganic nitrogen amounts to 10.5 106 g.m(-2). Yr(-1), while that of organic nitrogen is half this figure. The particulate flux is 15.106 g.m(-2).yr(-1). On the other hand, the phytoplanktonic nitrogen accounts for only 6% of the total particulate... |

Fluxes of nutrients (NH sub(4) super(+), NO sub(3) super(-), PO sub(4) super(3-) and Si(OH) sub(4)) were studied on an intertidal mudflat in Marennes-Oleron Bay, France, at two different seasons and at different times of the emersion period. Fluxes through the sediment-water interface were both calculated from vertical profiles of nutrient concentration in pore-water (diffusive fluxes, JD) and measured in light and dark benthic mini-chambers (measured fluxes, J sub(0)). Results indicate that ammonia was mainly released in summer while nitrate was mainly taken up in late winter. This uptake from the overlying water was probably due to the coupling of nitrification-denitrification within the sediment. The J sub(0) /J sub(D) ratio further indicates that... |
